Into the DeepWood: DotMote's Sapflow Joins a Sensor Chorus

At DotMote Labs, we aspire for wild integrations, next-gen sensors, and pushing the limits of environmental sensing. So when the team at Mechanimal reached out to collaborate on their DeepWood project, we were nothing but excited on this new foray.

Bringing the Forest to Life
DeepWood, a radical blend of art, forest science, and responsive environments wasn't our typical research deployment. It's a living, breathing sensor-augmented forest installation, where nature and technology coalesce into an immersive, reactive ecosystem. Think of it as trees communicating to us through data, soil responding to footsteps, and light patterns, and shifting water movements with sapflow rhythms.
Leading this vision was Danilo, plant sensor wizard and biofeedback designer, who crafted a botanical orchestra of interconnected devices. Our role? Powering a tree's heartbeat with DotMote Sapflow sensors—precise, robust, and field-ready.
Plugging into the Bio-Network
DotMote engineers worked closely with Danilo to seamlessly integrate our sapflow sensors into his custom-designed sensor ecosystem. This wasn't just plug-and-play—we had to fine-tune firmware, align power profiles, and build synchronized data streams that could harmonize with a network of acoustic, visual, and ecological signals.
With real-time sapflow data coursing through the network, DeepWood could visualize the tree's internal rhythm showing the unseen, and bring immersive experience: how water pulses through trunks, how stress builds with heat, and how the trees respond to the world around it.
A Sensor Army, United
The result? A full-stack sensing experience unlike anything else. DotMote's sapflow units joined a chorus of soil probes, air sensors, bark microphones, and even fungal communication modules (yes, really), turning the forest into a living symphony of data.
From code to canopy, this wasn't just an install—it was a collaboration across disciplines, across species, and across layers of time.
Why This Matters
This project reflects what DotMote Labs is all about: integrated systems, deep science, and creative applications of environmental tech. We're not just building sensors—we're enabling new ways of listening to the Earth.
Final Word
Massive shoutout to the Mechanimal crew and Danilo for dreaming big, coding wild, and building something truly alive. DeepWood is proof that when engineers, artists, and ecologists team up, forests can talk back—and now, with DotMote Sapflow, we can hear them more clearly than ever.
